The first section of the Dewey Decimal System is contains the general works. Here you will find not only the encyclopedia but also information about computers, library science, other reference works such as almanacs. You will also find about museums, organizations, journalism, and publishing. Last of all if you are a collector this is where you can learn about collections, rare books and rare printed materials. There is a lot more than you would first think.. here is just a start; more will be added as needed.

Encyclopedias
Here are some free encyclopedias that will help you find general information on a variety of subjects. Britanica requires membership. The How Stuff Works is a great source of information, it would be great for a science project. Encarta is a good free site; it also contains a dictionary and maps. The Smithsonian is good if you have a specific topic that they cover, not all subjects are there.

Almanacs
Almanacs are a great source of quick facts and fun trivia. Look here if you need to know the current population of Cincinatti or when the biggest volcoano erupted and where!!!! All are good for grades 9-12. The Fact Monster is primarily for younger children but the information is good and easy to find, it would work with high school as well.

Dictionaries
Lots and lots of words, use the right one and spell it correctly. Dictionary is very good and up to date, the World Reference contains many helpful areas in addition to the dictionary. Visual Dictionary would work well with ESOL or ESE for vocaulary building.

Atlas
Maps for all needs. The Rand McNally is constantly updated and is good for infomation and well as trip planning. The National Geographic will make beautiful maps that can be made for nearly any area, different types of maps are available. This would be a great research tool as a lesson in itself.

Handbooks and Directories
Look up people and information anywhere; it is the phone book up to date and online. Easy but doesn't work as a door stop or booster chair.
